TUCSON - University of Arizona football began its spring practice season on Sat., March 2, at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium. In head coach Rich Rodriguez's second spring with the Wildcats, the squad dressed in helmets and shorts for a two-hour practice on Saturday. Below is a brief transcript of Rodriguez's remarks following practice.
On the day's practice:
"I think it was a pretty good start. I like the enthusiasm. We had great weather and our guys were anxious to get out there. There was pretty good retention from what we ended the season with so I thought it was a pretty good day."
On the differences between the first practice last year and this year:
"From a familiarity standpoint, it's night and day. We're not in shape right now but they understand the routine. There's a lot less of stressing effort than there was this time a year ago."
On the expectations of B.J. Denker:
"Like all of our returning players, we're expecting B.J. to have a better understanding of what we are doing. We want him to be sharp mentally and physically, have a sense of urgency. I think he had a pretty good day. I thought Javelle Allen is learning. We're going to put a lot of pressure on those guys, as much as you can in the spring, and try to simulate the pressure you face in the game."
On moving receiver Richard Morrison to cornerback:
"It was really at his request. I think he knows we need some competition there. He asked to move and I think it's going to be a pretty good move for us. We're down a few corners this spring so he's going to get a lot of reps. He's athletic enough to help us. I like Richard, he's a good football player. He really wants to play, he want to prove himself."
On what he hoped to see on day one:
"I think we are always coaching effort and certainly, fundamentals. We're really so simple in the spring we shouldn't have a lot of mental mistakes. Fundamentally, I want to see them doing the right things and effort, are they doing it on every snap"
