Arizona Football Scrimmages for Saturday Practice
By: Arizona Athletics
Release: March 29, 2014

TUCSON, Ariz. Head coach Rich Rodriguez and the University of Arizona football program continued spring practice on Saturday at Arizona Stadium. The 2014 Cats worked out in full pads for two hours with a majority of the time spent scrimmaging and in game-like situations. Below is a transcript of Rodriguez and senior offensive lineman Mickey Baucus’ comments following practice.

Head Coach Rich Rodriguez

On today’s practice:

“The defense I thought had been practicing pretty well but they didn’t today. On the flip side, the offense did well and did better than they have been. Quarterbacks played pretty efficient. The wide receivers caught the ball pretty well. I thought it was a productive day.”

On the improvements he wants to make throughout the spring:

“We struggle a little with some execution issues offensively and the quarterbacks weren’t as sharp as they needed to be. They’ve slowly been getting better. Today, I thought all of them made some plays. I need to see the film to see if it was a product of them making plays or if defense is making plays. As a head coach, it’s hard to be happy when they’re not all playing well. But there is a little bit of back and forth, which is probably the best thing.”

On if there is more intensity for the spring game:

“I think it’s the opposite. As the weeks go on, they lose intensity because they get tired of it. They shouldn’t lose intensity for a scrimmage because we only scrimmage three times. That shouldn’t be an issue. That needs to be a little better.”

On player intensity:

“Obviously, we are looking for guys that can play their position and have technique but also have a certain level of intensity. For the first seven practices, I thought the defense’s intensity was outstanding, but today it wasn’t.”

On the redshirt freshman running backs:

“They’re okay. They’re getting a lot of reps. From Daniel Jenkins and Ka’Deem Carey, two of the best guys that we had and veterans, they’re not going to be at that level yet. There’s some talent there. Coach (Calvin) Magee is pushing them through to get them to play at a higher level, so I think they’ve gotten better.”

On the upcoming spring game:

“I’m excited. I’m more excited for our fans to see some of the new guys and for some of our new guys who haven’t played in that type of environment. It should be a good time.”

Senior Offensive Lineman Mickey Baucus

On overall impressions of scrimmage:

“There were a couple days in practice where we didn’t execute as well as we would like to but we came out here and put together a full day. It’s nice to come out here and execute and have great intensity. We’re moving along.”

On problem in the first couple practices:

“We just weren’t executing but we had good intensity for the most part. We were playing physical but a bad snap here, dropped ball there; we just weren’t putting everything together. Today we came out here and had a good solid day.”

On intensity of second half of spring practices:

“We try to keep a high intensity at all times. It’s like preparing for a regular game in that we’re out here in front of thousands of people so there’s that extra push to be perfect.”

On feelings of last spring scrimmage:

“It’s definitely bittersweet. Spring ball can get a little dull at times but it’s the last time I’ll be out here in the spring playing in Arizona Stadium in front of thousands of fans.”

On spring practice now compared to when Coach Rodriguez first started:

“The team understands what’s expected from us more compared to when Coach Rodriguez first came in. The veterans know exactly what’s expected and we try to lay it on to the rookies to make things run smoother.”

On the offensive line:

“We’re gelling well. We talk about climbing a mountain one step at a time and for the most part, I think we’ve taken a step up that mountain every single day.”
