TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona soccer completed a Red-Blue Scrimmage with the Blue squad defeating Red, 3-1, Saturday night at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.

Freshman Lexe Selman recorded the first goal for Blue early on in the match off a flip-throw-in from freshman Jaden DeGracie. The second goal for Blue came from junior transfer Alexandra Doller, crediting Selman with the assist. DeGracie scored the third and final goal for Blue to make the score 3-0.

Senior Jazmin Ponce answered DeGracie’s goal with Red’s first score of the night off a shot from the top of the box to make the score 3-1.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez’s comments on the scrimmage:

What are your thoughts on tonight’s scrimmage?

“I think it was good, we’ve come a long way since the beginning of camp. We still have a long ways to go but we’re definitely making progress.”

What do you think is the most important to improve on?

“Coming together as a team and getting on the same page with the coaches and what everybody wants. Once we become a cohesive unit, we’ll be really hard to beat.”

Head coach Tony Amato’s comments following the scrimmage:

How do you think the scrimmage went?

“I thought it was very good. We just talked to them about where we started on August 6 to now and how we’ve had a lot of growth. If we can do that now to our first game then we will be in a much better position than where we started and that’s all we can really ask of them. There are still things we need to work on and we need to play against people other than ourselves. Unfortunately, we don’t have a preseason game so we’re going to find out some things that first game rather to have known going in. For what it was tonight, I thought it was a dress rehearsal with the players and we saw some good things.”

Any individuals in particular you were impressed with?

“Obviously there are some core players that we know what we’re going to get out of. Jazmin Ponce for example is an excellent player, first-team Pac-12 player. We were focusing in on the players whose roles in the past weren’t asked to do a lot. Sheaffer Skadsen we moved to a different position and she’s elevated her game. Mykaylin Rosenquist we moved to the back and we’re counting on her to play a lot of minutes for us, she did a great job tonight. Some of the new players, Lexe Selman, scored a goal for us and set one up, she did great. There were some pieces there that we feel good about and it’s hard to just single out a few because we saw a lot of positives.”

What do you need to focus on this week?

“The biggest thing is putting them in positions where they get exposed a little bit. When you’re constantly training against yourselves, you can end up getting a false sense of where you’re at. When you play against other players you can realize what you have to work on and improve on. The biggest thing is trying to find a way to set up training where they get exposed so we know what we have to tweak moving forward. I think once I watch film tonight there will be some things that will stand out that we have to fine tune going into Friday.”

The Wildcats will travel to Miami on Friday, Aug. 23 to take on Florida International at 4:00 p.m. at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium. For continued coverage of Arizona Wildcat women’s soccer, follow the team on Twitter @ArizonaWSoccer, at facebook.com/ArizonaWSoccer or visit ArizonaWildcats.com.
