Wildcats Set for Sun Devils

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s soccer finished the weekend 1-1 after battling Utah to a 1-0 loss in double overtime and earning a 3-0 victory over Colorado. The Wildcats advance to 8-7-4 on the season and will match up against Arizona State Thurs., Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.

In the match vs. Utah, Arizona (8-7-4) defense held Utah scoreless for 102 minutes through two overtime periods. The Wildcats outshot the Utes, 19-13, with senior Jazmin Ponce leading the team with eight, three on goal. Freshman Lexe Selman and senior Ana-Maria Montoya each recorded three shots apiece.

In a 3-0 shutout against Colorado, sophomore Hannah Wong recorded Arizona’s first goal in the 64th minute off a pass from Ponce. Four minutes later, junior Julia Glanz scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Wong. With four minutes remaining in the match, junior Alexandra Doller recorded the third and final goal for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded a season-high of 10 saves for the Wildcats.

On the season, Ponce leads the team in goals with 10 as well as shots with 84, 37 on goal. Doller is second on the team in goals with seven and shots with 40. With the addition of a goal against Colorado, Wong recorded her fourth goal of the season to add to the Wildcats 36 goal total. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez has scored five goals for the Cats in the 19 matches played.

With a shut out against Colorado, Kaufman has recorded five shutouts on the season including matches vs. Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside, No. 24 Ohio State and Oregon State. Kaufman has a total of 97 saves averaging a .808 saves percentage.

In the Pac-12, Arizona is tied with Washington State and UCLA for first place in goals with 36. In the shots category, Arizona ranks fourth with 312 total shots. Senior Ponce leads the Pac-12 in shots with 84 and is tied for first place in game-winning goals with five. Goalkeeper Kaufman is ranked No. 2 in saves with a total of 97.

The Wildcat defense has held their 19 opponents scoreless for a total of 1,341 minutes, including seven matches decided by a single goal (Florida Atlantic, No. 11 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford, California, Oregon, USC and Utah). Seven matches have gone into overtime including match-ups vs. No. 24 Ohio State, Kansas, Illinois, No. 2 Stanford, USC, Washington and Utah.

Up next, the Cats conclude the 2013 regular season hosting in-state rival Arizona State on Thurs., Nov. 7. The match is set to kickoff at 2 p.m. and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
