Cats Host In-State Rival ASU in Regular-Season Finale

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer team is set to host Arizona State Thurs., Nov. 7 for their final match of the 2013 season. The match will be played at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. Kick off is set for 2 p.m. and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Last Time Out: In the previous weekend, the Wildcats moved to 8-7-4 on the season after battling Utah to a 1-0 double overtime loss and earning a 3-0 victory over Colorado. In the match vs. Utah, The Wildcats outshot the Utes, 19-13, with senior Jazmin Ponce leading the team with eight, three on goal. In a 3-0 shutout over Colorado, Hannah Wong, Julia Glanz and Alexandra Doller each scored a goal apiece. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded a season high of 10 saves for the Wildcats.

About the Sun Devils: Last weekend, Arizona State (9-7-2) took both Colorado and Utah to double overtime battles. In a 2-2 tie against Colorado, Kaitlyn Pavlovich and Blair Alderson scored the goals for the Sun Devils. In a 2-1 victory over Utah, Cali Farquharson recorded the game-winning goal for ASU in the first minute of the second overtime period. Farquharson leads the Sun Devils in goals with 10 and shots with 60. Goalkeeper Chandler Morris has recorded a total of 68 saves on the season.

Wildcats Ranked in the Pac: In the Pac-12, Arizona is tied with Washington State and UCLA for first place in goals with 36. In the shots category, Arizona ranks fourth with 312 total shots. Senior Ponce leads the Pac-12 in shots with 84 and is tied for first place in game-winning goals with five. Goalkeeper Kaufman is ranked No. 2 in saves with a total of 97.

Stats among the Cats: On the season, Ponce leads the team in goals with 10 as well as shots with 84, 37 on goal. Doller is second on the team in goals with seven and shots with 40. With the addition of a goal against Colorado, Wong recorded her fourth goal of the season to add to the Wildcats 36 goal total. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez has scored five goals for the Cats in the 19 matches played. Freshman Jaden DeGracie leads the team in assists with seven.

New to the Roster: Of the 13 freshmen and one transfer on the 2013 roster, eight newcomers have playing time under their belts. Junior transfer Doller ranks second on the Wildcat roster in goals with seven. Freshmen Justene Kesterson and Haley Silverberg have both scored goals for the Wildcats. Freshman Lexe Selman has recorded a total of 27 shots, including nine on goal. Freshman DeGracie has a total of 17 shots with eight on goal and seven assists.

Kaufman Saves Arizona: With a shut out against Colorado, Kaufman has recorded five shutouts on the season including matches vs. Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside, No. 24 Ohio State and Oregon State. Kaufman has a total of 97 saves averaging a .808 saves percentage.

Defense Stands Strong: The Wildcat defense has held their 19 opponents scoreless for a total of 1,341 minutes, including seven matches decided by a single goal (Florida Atlantic, No. 11 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford, California, Oregon, USC and Utah). Seven matches have gone into overtime including match-ups vs. No. 24 Ohio State, Kansas, Illinois, No. 2 Stanford, USC, Washington and Utah.
