TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Wildcat women’s soccer and head coach Tony Amato have announced an exciting spring competition schedule for 2014. The Cats will compete in a total of five matches, two of which will be played in Tucson.
The Wildcats will compete against three non-conference universities including New Mexico, UTEP, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona and the Portland Thorns. Two matches will be held in Tucson, Ariz.
In addition to two home games, the Cats will travel to El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP, Las Cruces, N.M. to face New Mexico State and Flagstaff, Ariz. to compete against Northern Arizona.
2014 spring schedule:
March 28 | 7 p.m | vs. Portland Thorns | Tucson, Ariz. (North Stadium at Kino Sports Complex)
March 30 | 11 a.m. | vs. New Mexico | Tucson, Ariz. (Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium)
April 5 | 2 p.m. vs. UTEP | El Paso, Texas (University Field)
April 6 | 12 p.m. | vs. New Mexico State | Las Cruces, N.M. (Soccer Athletic Complex)
April 19 | 2:30 p.m. | vs. Northern Arizona | Flagstaff, Ariz. (Max Spilsbury Field at Lumberjack Stadium)
The Cats plan on carrying the momentum gained from a winning season in the fall into this spring season. First-year head coach Amato will be focusing on individual development and team progression. The spring games are an important aspect in the advancement of the team and will help Arizona soccer take another step forward. The Wildcats have been dedicated to the process of winning the Pac-12 games and these matches will add excitement and motivation to compete and be successful.
The Wildcats started building a legacy in the 2013 season by remaining undefeated for six-straight games, including a notable 0-0 tie against No. 24 Ohio State and a 6-0 shutout against UC Riverside. The 3-0-3 start for the Wildcats was the best since 1994, the program’s inaugural year. The Cats posted their first winning record since 2005 with victories against Colorado, USC and ASU.
