TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona soccer will play a match against the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) at North Stadium at Kino Sports Complex on Friday, March 28. As part of the Thorns’ preseason training and Arizona’s spring schedule, the match will be hosted by FC Tucson and will begin at 7 p.m. MT.
“This game is a great opportunity for our team to compete against some of the best players in the world,” head coach Tony Amato said. “We are excited to play in the new stadium here in Tucson and believe this will be a great event for the soccer community. I know our players will rise to the occasion and compete at a high level. I want to thank FC Tucson for setting this up and continuing to help showcase soccer in our area.”
The Wildcats finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 9-7-4, earning the first winning record UA has seen since 2005. Arizona was undefeated for six-straight games, including a notable 0-0 tie against No. 24 Ohio State and a 6-0 shutout against UC Riverside. The 3-0-3 start for the Wildcats was the best since 1994, the program’s inaugural year.
The defending NWSL Champions, Portland Thorns FC earned the league’s inaugural title in 2013. Featuring some of the best women’s soccer players in the world, including U.S. Women’s National Team forward Alex Morgan and Canada Women’s National Team forward Christine Sinclair, Thorns FC are a member of the nine-team NWSL which began play in 2013.
