Wildcats Edge UCLA to Open Homecoming Weekend

 TUCSON, Ariz. A victory in the final event of the day was enough to lift the Arizona swimming and diving team to a narrow 151-149 win over UCLA on Friday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Heading into the final event of the day, the 200 yard freestyle relay, UCLA led Arizona, 141-138. In the final relay event, the efforts of Taylor Schick, Bonnie Brandon, Alana Pazevic, and Gracie Finnegan powered Arizona to a first place finish in a time of 1:32.16, edging the Bruins by three tenths of a second. The victory clinched the team title for the Wildcats. Finnegan, who swam the anchor leg for the Cats, posted the fastest split of the event with a time of 22.74.

Arizona started the day by winning the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Alana Pazevic, Emma Schoettmer, Katja Kajdinak and Margo Geer came out on top with a time of 1:41:10.

Brandon and Geer each finished first in three individual events, and Schoettmer earned first place finishes in two of her individual events.

Geer won the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle events. The senior finished the 200 yard freestyle with the time of 1:49. 04 and went on to finish the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.89. In the 100 yard freestyle event, Geer posted a time of 49.26.

Brandon earned first place in the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle and the 200 yard backstroke. Brandon’s time of 9:55.74 in the 1000 yard freestyle earned the top spot. Brandon continued her winning form in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.12.  Brandon took the top spot in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.67, and coming in at second and third was Sara Borendame with a time of 2:17.55 and Eve Sarris with a time of 2:19.44.

Schoettmer finished first in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke. Schoettmer and Borendame went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroker with times of 1:01.63 and 1:03.61.Schoettmer and Borendame went 1-2 again in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:12.50 and 2:17.55.

The Wildcats will be back in action, as both men’s and women’s teams will host USC at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.
