TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite eight first-place finishes on day two of a two-day dual meet, the Arizona swimming and diving teams fell to Texas on Senior Day, Saturday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The Texas women defeated Arizona 196-157, while the Texas men won 194-153.
For the second straight day, the Wildcats started the meet with a win. The women took the 200 medley relay as the team of Alana Pazevic, Emma Schoettmer, Katja Hajkinak and Margo Geer touched in 1:41.54. Meanwhile, the men’s relay followed with a win as Mitchell Friedemann, Kevin Cordes, Andrew Porter and Brian Stevens touched in 1:29.07.
Bonnie Brandon kept the Arizona momentum going with a victory in the 1000 free with a time of 9:59.45. The Wildcats picked up some key points as teammate Tjasa Oder finished second in 10:00.27.
Later, senior Mitchell Friedemann won the 100 back with a 48.34 ahead of Texas' Kip Darmody, who posted a 48.74.
Kevin Cordes continued to stay unbeaten in individual events this year as he easily won the 100 breast with a time of 53.64.
After winning the 100 fly yesterday, senior Ashley Evans won the 200 fly today with a time of 2:00.25, winning the event by more than a full second.
Eric Solis, who was also recognized on Senior Day, won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.45, finishing just ahead of teammate and fellow senior Sam Rowan, who finished in 1:51.47.
Sophomore Rafael Quintero also earned a victory in the platform diving competition.
The Wildcats closed out the meet strong as the women won the 400 free relay as Brandon, Grace Finnegan, Pazevic and Geer finished in 3:18.66.
The Wildcats return to the water next Saturday, Feb. 8 for their final dual meet of the season as they travel to in-state rival Arizona State. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
