Labonté Wins Shot Put At Willie Williams Classic

Tucson, Ariz.The University of Arizona Wildcat men’s and women’s track and field teams will began the 2014 outdoor season by hosting the Willie Williams Classic. The meet is being held at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. On Saturday, the field events for the collegiate portion are set to start at 10 a.m. and the track events begin at 10:45 a.m.

 

Senior Julie Labonté won the women’s shot put competition with a toss of 56-0 (17.07m). Labonté will also throw the discus on Saturday. Also in the shot put, senior Amber Passalaqua had a toss of 36-9.5 (11.21m), a personal best for the heptathlete. Freshman Aleah Hurst, who is a heptathlete in the making, threw 30-0.25 (9.15m) for her first time ever competing in the event. Junior Daniel Whitham threw 171-2 (52.17m) in the men’s hammer throw competition, good for second place overall. On the women’s side, former Wildcat and All-American Taylor Bush took first place with a toss of 212-0 (64.63m). In the women’s javelin, Passalaqua threw 99-10 (30.42m). Redshirt freshman Aaron Castle threw 155-8 (47.45m) in the discus, good for fifth place overall. Redshirt sophomore Harrison Ivie had a personal-best toss of 130-4 (39.73m) and the decathlete finished in 10th place. Freshman Gerhard De Beer won the competition with a toss of 181-5 (55.30m), he competed as unattached athlete and he is redshirting the outdoor season.

 

In the men’s long jump, freshman Avery Mickens had a personal-best mark of 24-3 (7.39m, 0.3 wind) and earned a third-place finish. For the women’s long jump, sophomore Ali Rodseth had a personal-best mark of 18-0.5 (5.50m, 0.0 wind) in the women’s long jump, good for second place overall.

 

In the women’s 5K, redshirt junior Elvin Kibet won with a time of 17:11.32. Sophomore Kate Penney earned a runner-up finish with a time of 17:39.57. Senior Amanda Russell clocked a time of 17:41.84 and took third place. Senior Erin Menefee finished in fourth place and posted a time of 17:47.04. Sophomore Hanna Peterson clocked a time of 18:38.61 and finished in eighth place.

 

Junior Sam Macaluso took third place in the men’s 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:51.89. Junior Kenji Bierig’s time of 3:56.38 was good for fourth place. Sophomore Sam Willis’ time of 3:59.63 was good for fifth place. Junior Stephanie Bulder won the women’s 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:37.25. It was her first time running that race as a Wildcat. Sophomore Molly Callahan earned a second-place finish with a time of 4:41.90. Senior Meg Bellino had a time of 4:49.39, good for third place. Junior Clea Formaz had a time of 4:50.14 and freshman McKenna Gaffney clocked a time of 4:53.70. Freshman Travis Thorne ran the men’s 5K in 15:35.22, good for fourth place overall.

 

In the men’s 200 meters, junior Mohammad Alhasan had a personal-best time of 21.81 (0.0 wind) and took fourth place overall. Junior Branden Helms had a personal-best time of 21.83 (0.0 wind) and finished in fifth sixth place overall. Freshman Bryce Houston ran 22.14 (-0.8 wind), good for ninth place.

 

In the women’s 200-meter sprint, freshman Jasmin Pratt had a time of 25.37 (0.0 wind) and took seventh place overall. Freshman Jasper Gray’s time of 25.43 (-0.5 wind) was good for eighth place. Freshman Aaliyah Haggard had a time of 25.46 (0.0 wind) and finished in ninth place. Freshman Alex Gilbert ran the 200 meters in 25.55 (0.0 wind), good for 10th place. Freshman Lizzie Smith’s time of 25.61 (0.0 wind) was good for 11th place. Passalaqua had a time of 25.95 (0.0 wind) and Hurst came in at 26.99 (-1.4 wind).
