TUCSON – Arizona scored 26 runs on 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Arizona Western and Central Arizona on day two of the Arizona Fall Invitational. UA run-ruled Arizona Western, 15-0, before downing Central Arizona 11-3 on Saturday.
Chelsea Goodacre hit three home runs and drove in a staggering 11 total runs in the two games. Against Central Arizona, Goodacre hit a home run on top of Gittings Gym, a three-story structure located about 40 feet beyond the right field fence. The junior joins an exclusive group to do so during game action. Goodacre went 7-for-7 in the two combined games.
The Arizona Fall Invitational wraps up tomorrow, with Arizona competing in games scheduled for 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. PDT.
Game 1 – Arizona 15, Arizona Western 0 (5 innings)
Chelsea Goodacre drove in five runs on a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate as Arizona cruised to a 15-0, five-inning victory over Arizona Western.
Michelle Floyd and Estela Piñon combined on the two-hit shutout. Floyd tossed the first three innings and struck out four while allowing one hit. Piñon hurled two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Arizona’s offensive attack plated multiple runs in the first three innings including an eight-run third.
Chelsea Suitos and Goodacre added to the Arizona lead in the second with two run singles each.
UA sent 12 batters to the plate in the third and scored eight runs. Courtney .odriguez and Lauren Young had RBI singles in the frame while Hallie Wilson cleared the bases with a two-run triple and Chelsea Goodacre hit a three-run homer.
Game 2 – Arizona 11, Central Arizona 3
A nine-run fifth inning propelled Arizona to victory in its second game of the day in a 11-3 victory over Central Arizona.
Chelsea Goodacre went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI, including a two-run homer on top of Gittings Gym.
Shelby Babcock allowed two runs on five hits in the three innings. Babcock struck out two and walked two in the contest.
Kenzie Fowler, pitching in her first game since May of 2012, allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in four innings.
Central Arizona plated two runs in the top of the first inning, the first runs surrendered by UA pitching during the tournament.
The Cats responded in the third when Goodacre’s two-run homer made it 2-2.
Central Arizona retook the lead with a run in the fifth. Alesia Martinez doubled in Maddie Richard, who singled to start the inning.
Arizona wasted little time to take its first lead of the game. Goodacre’s blast on the Gittings Gym scored Lauren Young to give Arizona the lead. Kelsey Rodriguez followed with a home run. Three consecutive singles followed the home run and all scored when Cynthia Pelayo tripled to right center. Alex Lavine singled home a run before Goodacre picked up RBI numbers three and four of the inning with a single up the middle.
