TUCSON Arizona softball plated eight runs on 11 hits while its pitchers hurled their fourth shutout of the season as the Wildcats cruised to an 8-0, five-inning victory over New Mexico, Friday night in UA’s second game of the Hillenbrand Invitational.
With the 8-0 victory, Arizona (5-0) has now outscored its five opponents on the season 48-2. Its pitchers have a sparkling 0.52 ERA while the Cats are hitting .452 as a team.

Chelsea Goodace, Kellie Fox and Lauren Young homered in the contest. The home runs gave Goodacre and Fox three each on the season while it was Young’s first blast.

Nancy Bowling (2-0) started the game and pitched three innings of scoreless ball. The sophomore allowed two hits and struck out three in the contest. Kenzie Fowler hurled the final two innings and did not allow a run on one hit.

Carrie Sheehan (1-2) suffered the loss for New Mexico. Sheehan pitched the entire game and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. She did not walk or strike out a batter.

Arizona got the scoring started in the first when back-to-back singles by Kelsey Rodriguez and Kellie Fox put two on for Chelsea Goodacre. The junior hit her second three-run homer in as many games to give UA a 3-0 lead.

The Cats manufactured a run in the second to add on to its lead. Courtney Rodriguez led off the frame with a double and moved to third on Alex Lavine’s groundout. Hallie Wilson’s fly ball to right field scored Rodriguez to extend UA’s lead to four runs.

Fox and Lauren Young would lead off the third and fourth innings with solo homers to extend Arizona’s lead to 6-0. Arizona would add another in the fourth when Kelsey Rodriguez’s groundout brought in her sister Courtney.

UA would walk off in the bottom of the fourth when the Cats put two on with back-to-back singles by Mo Mercado and Young. Courtney Rodriguez’s grounder to third base would be booted by Jasmine Casados to allow Mercado to score and give Arizona the 8-0 victory.

Arizona will be back in action Saturday when it takes on Tennessee State at 4:00 and fourth-ranked Alabama at 6:00 p.m. MST.
