Tempe, Ariz. – Despite outhitting ASU 8-4, Arizona was able to score just one run off Sun Devil starter Mackenzie Popescue as Arizona State secured the series victory with a 4-1 win Saturday night at Farrington Stadium.
Arizona State (32-5, 6-2 Pac-12) scored four runs in the fifth inning on just two hits to earn the come-from-behind victory after Arizona (28-8, 3-5 Pac-12) plated its only run in the top of the first inning.
Kenzie Fowler (5-3) allowed four runs on four hits in the complete game. The senior struck out four but walked 10 batters in the contest.
The Wildcats, who entered the series 26-2 when outhitting their opponent, dropped the second consecutive game in the series while outhitting ASU. UA outhit the Sun Devils 5-4 Friday night in the 2-1 loss.
Hallie Wilson had three of Arizona’s eight hits, marking the fourth game this season that the junior has had three hits. Chelsea Goodacre had UA’s lone RBI on a single in the top of the first inning.
Mackenzie Popescue (16-1) earned the win for ASU. The Sun Devil hurler allowed one run on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in the complete game.
UA drew first blood in the top of the first when Goodacre’s line drive which tipped off the second baseman’s glove found the grass and scored Wilson from second.
Both pitchers would work out of trouble through the next four innings, including two bases-loaded jams for Fowler, until Elizabeth Caporuscio’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at one. After two walks loaded the bases in following the double, pinch hitter Chelsea Gonzales cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to give ASU a 4-1 lead.
Arizona would get runners on in each of the next two innings, but the potential tying run never left the on-deck circle.
The Cats and Sun Devils conclude the series Sunday at 7:00 p.m. PDT on the Pac-12 Network.
