LONG BEACH, Calif. – After Tuesday’s final round at the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate, Arizona men's golf finished second for its third top-five finish of the spring. Hosted by Long Beach State, the two-day event was held at the Virginia Country Club (par 70, 6,582 yards).

Minnesota took the top title beating out the rest of the competition with a team score of 836 (-4). Long Beach State’s Kevin Lee was awarded first place in the individual race with a score of 202 (-8).

The Wildcats finished second with rounds of 272, 285 and 280 for a combined score of 837 (-3). Arizona improved over the course of the tournament after finishing the first day in fifth place. The team total of three-under 837 was just one stroke from the first place finisher.

“We didn’t have our best stuff all day, but the guys really battled,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “I am very proud of their effort and belief until the end. Yes, we were a little disappointed to lose by a single shot, but we know we are getting better and better each week. We will use this experience to put it together for a strong finish at home in two weeks at the NIT.”

Overall, Senior Erik Oja led the Wildcats concluding the tournament in a fifth-place tie. Oja shot a 70 (E) on the day to bring his total to 207 (-3).

Directly behind Oja was junior Alex McMahon who surged up to seventh place after finishing the first day in 15th. McMahon shot a 68 (-2) to improve his total to 208 (-2).  Senior Benson Liu also finished in to the top-10 after finishing the day shooting a 71 (+1).

“Our top guys are proving to be very reliable,” Anderson said. “The reason the team has had a chance the last few week is because guys like Erik and Alex have committed to playing their games. Benson stepping it up has really added a dynamic to our team that makes us very competitive. It will be fun to see our group play together to finish the season.”

Sophomore Kolton Lapa improved in the third round shooting a one-over 71 to earn a total of 213 (+3). Lapa finished the tournament in a tie for 26th place. Behind Lapa was Brenden Redfern who remained shot a 72 (+2) on the day. Redfern earned a total of 215 (+5) for a 34th place finish.

As an individual, Christian Colegrove shot his best round of the tournament with 73 (+3). Colgrove finishes in 54th place with a total of 223 (+13).

The Wildcats will resume spring competition in two weeks when they host the NIT, which be held at the OMNI Tucson National-Catalina Course from Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16. For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
