TUCSON, Ariz. – After the first day of the Redhawk Invitational, Arizona men’s golf is in ninth place in the team standings with a total score of 576 (+11). Held at Chambers Bay (par 70, 7,047 yards) in University Place, Wash., competition will conclude Tues., April 8.

“We had solid outings from Erik and Alex, which is something we come to expect from each of them,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “We have not had depth at home and our back end struggled today. Chambers Bay is hosting a major so there is no room to second guess yourself.”

No. 15 UCLA and San Diego lead the field with a four-under par score of 556. Both teams are tied for the first place spot. No. 17 Washington sits in third place just two strokes from the top spot with a score of 558 (-2).

In the first round, the Wildcats sat in a tie for eighth place shooting a team total of 285. Senior Erik Oja led the Wildcats shooting 68 (-2) and was in a tie for sixth place entering the second round. Parker Houston, a new member of the qualified lineup, was the next Wildcat on the leaderboard shooting just one-over par. Kolton Lapa shot a round of 72 (+2) while Benson Liu shot four-over. Alex McMahon rounded out Arizona scoring shooting a 75.

In the second round, Oja continued to lead the Wildcats with a score of 70 (E). Oja ends the day in a tie for fifth-place with a total score of 138 (-2). McMahon jumped up in the rankings and improved his shot for a finish of 68 (-2) for 28th-place tie. Lapa and Liu shot rounds of 78 (+8) and 75 (+5), respectively. Houston rounded out Arizona scoring with a round of 80 (+10).

“We will regroup tonight and hope for more tough conditions tomorrow,” Anderson said. “We need our great round in tough conditions so we can chase down several teams in front of us. It will be a day that could define the rest of the season for us.”

The final round begins at 8 a.m. PT for the Wildcats. Live scoring is available at
