PHOENIX–University of Arizona seniors Dylan Kornberg and Alex McMahon both qualified to play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
The tournament is devised as a championship for golfers who play on public courses. Members of private golf clubs are prohibited from participating.
Both Tucson area natives, McMahon and Kornberg qualified this past weekend at the Aguila Golf Course in Phoenix. Kornberg finished the tournament tied for third with a score of, 63-70 (-7). McMahon finished the two-day qualifier tied for fifth place with an overall score of, 64-70 (-6). Kornberg’s weekend was highlighted by an opening nine 27 (-8). McMahon earned the final spot by winning a playoff with a birdie on the 2nd sudden death hole.
The 2014 Public links Championship will be played at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan. on July 14-19.
The USGA has announced that the 2014 Public Links championship will be the final of its kind. The format is 36 holes of qualifying before Match Play for the low 64 qualifiers.
