TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Kieren Thompson advanced in the main draw of ITA Southwest Regional Tournament on Friday at Pepperdine University, picking up a victory in the round of 64.

“Kieren did a great job taking care of business today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.

Thompson defeated Chris Meyer of Hawaii in impressive fashion, winning 6-1, 6-1 to move into the round of 32, where he will face UCLA’s Mackie McDonald on Saturday.

Earlier, in the opening round, junior Sumeet Shinde defeated Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon University in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to move into the round of 64. Thompson, senior Fredrik Ask, and sophomore Naoki Takeda had all received first-round byes.

The afternoon saw strong efforts from Ask and Takeda against nationally ranked opponents, but they couldn’t come away with victories.

Takeda fell to No. 45 Dennis Mkrtchian of UCLA 6-4, 6-4 and Ask fell to No. 63 Jonny Wang of Southern California 7-6, 6-3.

“Fred and Naoki put themselves in position against very tough competition,” said Berkowitz. “Their opponents were just a little stronger at the end.”

In his second match of the day, Shinde fell to No. 80 Michael Grant of Southern California, 6-0, 6-2.

The tournament will continue on Saturday with consolation matches, two rounds of singles, and one round of doubles.

In doubles, Ask and Thompson will face Miles Seemann and Corey Karen of Santa Barbara while Takeda and Shinde team up to play Roberto Quiroz and Raymond Sarmiento of Southern California.
