TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona finished their fall season on Saturday as they wrapped up the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota Fla.
Senior Fredrik Ask fell in his quarterfinal match against Florida’s Florent Diep 6-3, 7-5.
“I thought Fred did a great job today despite the loss,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “He proved to himself and his teammates that he can compete with top players.”
Ask went 2-1 in the tournament, bringing his overall fall record to 8-5.
Senior Kieren Thompson also finished his fall slate in the Dick Vitale Classic, and will head into spring with a 4-5 individual record for the academic year.
“All in all I feel good about our fall season,” Berkowitz said. “The guys are killing it on the practice courts and in the gym. We also have a team that’s on the same page and all of them are willing to do whatever it takes for us to accomplish our goals. I can’t wait for our spring season to get underway next semester.”
Arizona’s other senior, Mario Urquidi, completed his fall season earlier in November at the Easley Memorial Classic along with sophomore teammate Matt Dunn.
Urquidi’s individual record so far this year is 3-4, while Dunn is sitting at 7-4.
Juniors Sumeet Shinde, Robin Chou, Carlos Bermudez end their fall seasons with records of at 4-3, 2-2, and 3-3 respectively.
Naoki Takeda heads into spring at 7-5, and transfer sophomore Trevor James has yet to lose at Arizona with his 4-0 campaign.
The dual season kicks off on Jan. 17, 2014 as the Cats take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi in Albuquerque, N.M.
