TUCSON, Ariz. – Sumeet Shinde won both of his matches on Sunday but it wasn’t enough to spark the Wildcats in their attempt to upset No. 67 Texas A&M Corpus Christi and No. 72 New Mexico. Arizona fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-2 and New Mexico 4-1.

“We had a lot of long close matches this weekend and I think that affected us a little on the last day,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “Six matches in three days is a total grind and I am proud of the effort we put forth all weekend. This will only make us tougher as a team and we will definitely benefit from this as the season gets going.”

In the afternoon match against Corpus Christi, Shinde defeated Javier Pujol in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 and kept his momentum going to cruise to victory over New Mexico’s Mitchell McDaniels, 6-2, 6-3.

Arizona’s other point on the day came from senior Mario Urquidi, who defeated Pietro Jordao of Texas A&M Corpus Christi 6-2, 6-1. Urquidi later fell to Hayden Sabakta of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore Matt Dunn made his season debut against New Mexico’s Mads Hegelund, but left his match unfinished after New Mexico clinched the victory.

Senior Kieren Thompson fell in both of his matches, first to Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Ricardo Mayagoitia 6-1, 6-2, then New Mexico’s Samir Iftikhar 7-5, 6-3.

Fellow senior Fredrik Ask lost his sole match of the day, as Peter Nagy of Texas A&M Corpus Christi defeated him in a three setter, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Sophomore Naoki Takeda had a grueling match against Guillaume Rauseo, which included a 36-point tiebreaker in the second set. Despite outlasting Rauseo in the marathon set, Takeda fell in the end 7-6, 6-7 (17-19), 4-6.

Freshman Will Kneale lost both of his matches on the day, falling to Paul Cook of Corpus Christi 6-2, 6-2, and to New Mexico’s Rodolfo Jauregui 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Dominic Bermudez fell to James Hignett of New Mexico 6-0, 6-1.

The Cats will hold their home opener on Jan. 24 as they take on Northern Arizona at 12:30 p.m. The match will be held at the Tucson Country Club.
