Arizona women’s tennis won its fifth-consecutive match after upending No. 40 Purdue, 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Robson Tennis Center.
The Wildcats move to 12-1 on the season for their best start since 2006.
"I am very pleased with our effort today,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “We are in a really good place. To be 12-1 at this stage of the season is really nice.”
Arizona took care of business in doubles play after seniors Akilah James and Susan Mc Rann defeated Djokovic and Escribens, 8-0 at the No. 3 spot and senior Kim Stubbe and freshman Lauren Marker defeated Robinson and Feigenbaum, 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.
“I like the way the girls came out in the doubles,” Maes said. “We've certainly made improvement in our doubles the last few times around and that's been a huge jump start for us getting into singles.”
In singles play, the Wildcats continued their strong showing, starting with sophomore Shayne Austin at No. 5. Austin defeated Purdue’s Krisztina Kapistany, 6-1, 6-3.
Not far behind, Marker defeated Nicole Robinson, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, while junior Laura Oldham took her match against Andjela Djokovic, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
“The girls have to battle and I feel like we don't have to ask them to battle,” Maes said. “They come out, they're ready to go. They may not be playing their best tennis, which I think as we continue our season, we're still going to play better and we're still going to get tougher. But they're ready to battle and that's made all the difference so far."
Senior Kim Stubbe won her match, 6-1, 6-4 over Mara Schmidt at No. 2 and senior Lacey Smyth won, 7-5, 2-1 at No. 1 against Daniela Vidal.
Senior Akilah James finished the day with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 defeat of Tess Feigenbaum at the No. 3 spot.
“Overall, I’m pleased going into the Pac-12 season, with two big matches coming up Friday and Saturday,” Maes said. “I thought this was tough Purdue team and to come down and win that 7-0 is huge.”
Arizona will return to the court on Friday, March 21 to host No. 50 Washington State at 1:30 p.m. and Oregon on Saturday, March 22 at noon.
