TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 35 Arizona (15-3, 4-2 in Pac-12) defeated No. 30 Utah (11-6, 2-5 in Pac-12) Friday, 7-0 at the Robson Tennis Center.

“That’s a solid win against a team that has had a good record,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “We knew today was going to tough. After last weekend when we got the short end of the stick it was nice to come back home and play a match like this.”

Arizona earned the doubles point with victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.

Senior Lacey Smyth and sophomore Shayne Austin took the first victory of the match over Luisa Da Rosa and Sarah Richter, 8-2.

On court three seniors Susan Mc Rann and Akilah James earned a hard fought victory after dropping a few games in the middle of the match. They finished their win to clinch the doubles point with a score of, 8-4.

The court one match was abandoned after the point was clinched.

The Wildcats are now 15-0 when winning the doubles point to begin the match.

The Cats then took the momentum from the doubles match and ran with it as they got off to a quick start.

“I am proud the way the girls stepped up in singles,” said Maes. “It didn’t look like we were going to lose in singles. The girls were fired up and we got off to a good start.”

Austin claimed the second point for the Cats in a straight set victory over Paige Miles, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 95 Smyth earned her tenth victory this season at the No. 1 position with a score of, 6-4, 6-0.

James earned the match clinching point with a victory on court No. 4 with the score of, 6-1, 6-0.

“Kiki (James) had good energy and is starting to get her confidence back,” said Maes.

Junior Laura Oldham pushed the score to 5-0 when she defeated Luisa De Rosa, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Lauren Marker earned her 14th victory this season when she defeated Callie Craig, 6-3, 6-3.

The sweep was completed when senior Kim Stubbe came back, after dropping the first set, to win, 6-7 (1-7),6-0, 10-5.

“That is a real decisive win for us,” said Maes. “And a really important win for us, but we are not done. We still have to play Colorado tomorrow.”

Arizona women’s tennis will take on Colorado Saturday at noon at the Robson Tennis Center.
