Volleyball Wraps Up First Practice of 2014

Release: August 09, 2014
TUCSON – Arizona head volleyball coach Dave Rubio and the Wildcats held their first practice of the 2014 season inside Richard Jefferson Gymnasium, officially kicking off fall camp.

“I liked the concentration and effort levels of the players,” said Rubio, set to begin his 23rd season at the helm of the program. “We have a lot to work on, but I liked how tuned in they were.”

Arizona returns eight significant contributors from a season ago including 2013 honorable mention AVCA All-American and preseason all-conference team member Madi Kingdon. Arizona will look to build on its 21-13 (10-10 Pac-12) record and NCAA Tournament berth a year ago.

“We’re going to have a solid team,” said Rubio. “I think our setting will be good, I think our attacking will be fine. The difference between winning and losing is small now, so it will be the little things that determine points won and points lost, games won and games lost and matches won and lost. So we are just focusing on being very detail oriented right now.”

The Cats open the season Aug. 29 at the Wisconsin Tournament in Green Bay, Wisc., where they will take on South Dakota before meeting Green Bay and Kansas State on Aug. 30. UA opens up its home schedule in the newly renovated McKale Center when it hosts the Arizona Invitational Sept. 5 and 6.
