TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez this week announced that the school has signed 17 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The class is one of the most highly regarded in program history and is ranked No. 11 nationally by Perfect Game USA.

“This a marvelous recruiting class,” Lopez said. “It is a deep and talented group of players that we are excited to bring into our program next year. Our fans should be excited for the future, and I know each of these players will represent the standards of our program both on and off the field.”

The highly-touted signing class includes players from seven different states, including California (7), Arizona (3), Louisiana (2), Texas (2), Illinois (1), Hawaii (1) and Pennsylvania (1). The group includes 10 pitchers, two catchers and five other position players.

“This class is geared towards the strength of our program,” Lopez said. “I have always believed that championship teams are led by pitching, and we have some tremendous arms in this group. We also play in a big yard and we feel like the hitters and position players will thrive at Hi Corbett Field.”

Three of the players are ranked as top-100 players by Perfect Game USA, including Michael Kopech, Darius Day and Cole Tucker. Kopech is a right-handed pitcher from Mount Pleasant, Texas, who is also tabbed the 35th-best high school prospect for the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by Baseball America. Day, from Chicago, Ill., and Tucker from Phoenix, Ariz., are each considered the second-best prospects in their respective states by Perfect Game USA.

“We have one of the best facilities in the nation to recruit to and our fans have been outstanding at Hi Corbett Field,” Lopez said. “We feel like we can go after the best players in the country each year, especially with the way the MLB draft has changed in recent years.”

“I give credit to Shaun Cole and Matt Siegel on our coaching staff,” Lopez added. “They put in a lot of hard work the last couple of years building the relationships with these players and their families.”

Arizona’s fall practice season ended earlier this month. The Wildcats will return for preseason practices beginning Jan. 15, 2014.
