AUSTIN, Texas -
Day one of the Texas Invitational proved to be a good starting spot for the Arizona Swim team, as the Wildcats collected six first-place finishes and qualified 3 individuals and 3 relay teams for the NCAA Championships.
The Day was kicked off by Giles Smith qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the prelim of the 100 fly event with a time of 44.75. Also qualifying for the Championships during prelims was Margo Geer in the 50 free with a time of 21.92.
The Men’s 400 medley relay team capped off the evening by touching the wall three seconds ahead of the field and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The team of Smith, Kevin Cordes, Mitchell Friedemann, and Brian Stevens finished in a time of 3:03.73.
The women’s team claimed the 400 medley relay top spot as well. The team of Geer, Bonnie Brandon, Ashley Evans, and Emma Schoettmer just outouched the women of USC with a time of 3:33.66. That time qualified the team for the NCAA Championships.
Brandon also added another win for the Cats in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.43, which will qualify her for the NCAA Championships. Geer also improved on her time from the prelims swimming to a 21.78 finish and taking that event.
Smith won the final heat of the 100 fly improving on his time from the prelims to 44.73. Sophomore Michael Meyer took home the final heat of the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.01
The Wildcats will return to the pool to take on day two of the Invite on Friday. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. CT and finals at 6 p.m. CT.
