Texas Holds Lead After Day One of Two-Day Meet

TUCSON, Ariz.Day one of a two-day dual meet started off strong for the Arizona swimming and diving teams, as the Wildcats clinched seven first-place finishes against the University of Texas on Friday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Texas women lead 105-81 following the opening day of competition, while the Texas men hold a 121-65 advantage.

The Cats started the afternoon with a win in the women’s 200 free relay team with Bonnie Brandon, Margo Geer, Alana Pazevic and Grace Finnegan out-touching Texas with a time of 1:31.22.

The men’s relay followed shortly after as the Wildcats claimed th victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:20.51. The relay team of Kevin Steel, Mitchell Friedemann, Jeff Amlee and Brian Stevens beat the Longhorns by just .15 of a second.

Greer claimed the top spot in the 100 freestyle clocking in a time of 49.81, while teammate Finnegan took second in 50.66.

Brandon was the only Wildcat to claim multiple victories on the day. She took the 200 back with a time of 1:58.31, and followed up by winning the 500 free with a time of 4:50.60.

Kevin Cordes continued his dominance by taking the 200 breaststroke, finishing it with a time of 1:58.15. The American record holder in both the 100 breast and 200 breast remains unbeaten in individual events this season.

Ashley Evans claimed the final victory of the day for Arizona in a tight race in the 100 butterfly as she won with a time of 54.69, just out-touching Ellen Lobb of Texas (54.78).

The Wildcats return to the water tomorrow at 10 a.m. to cap off the final day of the dual meet against Texas. Tomorrow will also be Senior Day for Arizona’s 17 seniors. Senior recognition will begin at 9:40 a.m.
