TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time this season, Arizona junior breaststroker Kevin Cordes and sophomore diver Rafael Quintero have swept the Pac-12 Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Month awards, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Cordes is currently undefeated on the dual season, as he has won each of his individual events in the breaststroke up to this point. Last month, he competed in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races in three dual meets for Arizona, sweeping all six events against Stanford, Cal and Texas. In relay competition, Cordes helped the Wildcats to two first-place finishes through six total relays in January, first in the 400 medley versus Stanford and then again in the 200 medley versus Texas.
Quintero earned a pair of first-place finishes in the dual meet against Cal, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. The sophomore also earned a pair of second-place finishes against Stanford. Quintero rounded out the month placing second in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter in the dual meet versus Texas.
Cordes has now earned Swimmer of the Month a league-record six times throughout his career at Arizona, giving UA its 11th Swimmer of the Month selection. It is also only the only time that a male swimmer has received three-consecutive honors. Quintero’s accolade is the second of his career, with his first coming earlier this year for the month of November. It is Arizona’s fifth Diver of the Month selection all-time.
The Wildcats finish the dual season this month with a Territorial Cup meet against in-state rival Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 8 before kicking off Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships. Men’s diving will compete in the Conference championships February 26-March 1, while men’s swimming takes place March 5-8. Both championships will be at Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
