TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s swim team set off fireworks on the opening night of the Pac-12 Championship with a new meet record in the 200 medley relay on Wednesday inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The Arizona team of Mitchell Friedemann, Kevin Cordes, Giles Smith and Brad Tandy completed the 200 medley relay in 1:23.50 to shatter the previous meet record of 1:23.92 set by Cal in 2011. Tandy, who was competing in his first event at Arizona, swam an incredible 18.52 anchor leg of the 50 free to out-touch a Cal team that swam a very fast 1:23.91.

Incredibly, it was Arizona’s first ever Pac-12 title in the 200 medley relay. The time is also tops in the country so far this season.

The Wildcats followed up the opening night victory with a fifth place showing in the 800 free relay as Matt Barber, Thane Maudslien, Eric Solis and Sam Rowan finished with a time of 6:23.93.

After night one, Arizona sits in a second place tie with Cal in the team standings with 68 points. The Wildcats trail USC by just four points.

Day two of the Pac-12 Championships will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free with the finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tomorrow night’s final will also include the 200 free relay.
