Arizona head coach Sean Miller
Thoughts on the game:
"We did a good job. It's not easy to put a loss behind you especially a game like we played against UCLA. You disappoint so many people in the crowd. But part of the journey in the long season in being a good team is that you have to handle those situations right. We lost and had to move on to the next game and get better to be at our best. I give our team a lot of credit. It's not as easy as everyone thinks to go from Thursday night to Saturday at 5:00 p.m. We played very hard. We are developing and continuing to get better. Our defense was the story tonight."
On defensive effort:
"It's really hard to be a selfish team and to not be together and be really good, especially on defense. Generally, that is what breaks first. If you're not together and moving down the path, it's not good. There's a lot of unselfishness and going together in being a team. You almost have no choice but to feed it to the offensive end. We did that. We were ready to defense USC. I think you know this that the last three or four games they've really scored well. They made a lot of threes. But tonight they were more a function of our defense than they were of themselves."
On defensive contribution from the freshmen:
"It's a process. Everybody wants their young players to come in and all of a sudden dominate, but it takes time. If you really pay close attention to our team, we have a number of our young freshmen that continue to grow and get better on defense. As they get better on defense, the offense will come, but our team continues to develop. Brandon Ashley did a great job and had a great defensive effort at ASU. He's playing harder and has learned to be effective on that end. As that continues, it seems to weave some things for him on the offense. I can say the same thing for Grant [Jerrett] and Kaleb [Tarczewski]. Angelo [Chol] came in tonight and added to the depth that we like so much. We had to block out the rest of the world these last two days to focus on ourselves to make sure that we understood we were 16-2 before we started and we have the opportunity to go 17-2, and that is where we are at now.
On Angelo Chol and Gabe York:
"We've talked to Gabe [York] and Angelo [Chol] the last couple of weeks regarding opportunities. We have foul trouble sometimes. We aren't a perfect basketball team. We are always trying to get better. You watch Gabe shoot the ball and you say to yourself, `Gabe can step in there and make a difference.' I think the way that he's earned his opportunity is by doing what he does so well which is to practice hard and have a great attitude. We have a good group of guys that believe in each other. When you lose a game like we did to UCLA it tests our togetherness because believe me, there's a lot of people that would like to pull you apart. For us to stay together and have the performance we had tonight makes us all feel good. We have a really big road trip coming up at both of the Washington schools - place where we have not won in recent times. Being in Seattle always makes it a difficult game."
On tonight's overall performance:
"Whether we were winning or not you knew we were alive. Whether we made shots or not we were more than happy to make sure we worked hard on defense. Our goal is not to always be winning by the first media timeout. To be able to look at each other and feel like we were ready is a great thing."
Arizona Player Quotes
Freshman Forward Brandon Ashley
On bouncing back from the loss against UCLA:
"You don't want to lose but it happens. We wanted to get out there tonight and do what we do. Preparation is key, if you're prepared you're going to do well. Emotion also plays a huge factor on whether you're focused or not."
What was the difference in the start of the UCLA game and this one?
"We were overly anxious knowing it was a big game. Everybody wanted to play well but we messed ourselves up. We wanted to go out tonight and do what we do."
Freshman Forward Grant Jerrett
On aftermath of Thursday's loss:
"It was weird walking around campus with a loss. Nobody wants to lose but it's something you have to live with and learn from it."
On road games next week:
"It's another game for us to play. We go day by day and try to get better with each and every game."
Freshman Center Kaleb Tarczewski
On defense tonight:
"We knew after UCLA that we wanted to attack and I think we did that tonight. We had a rough start last night but our momentum tonight helped us throughout the whole game."
On receiving more passes tonight:
"It was nice to get the ball to show what I can do. There are so many great players on this team and you can't be selfish. You have to do what's best for the team, not just yourself."
