Head Coach Sean Miller Quotes:
On performance vs. Northern Arizona
"Our second half was really good. Our effort level was good across the board. We helped, recovered, and did the things we need to do defensively."
"I think our team continued to improve defensively, especially in the second half."
On Brandon Ashley
"I give Brandon Ashley a lot of credit. Tonight wasn't exactly his night in terms of points, but to have ten defensive rebounds and 11 in the game, especially in 23 minutes, is great. I thought he anchored our defense in the second half because he seemed to get every defensive rebound."
"How you practice is how you play, and how he played was very similar to how he practiced the other night."
On Nick Johnson
"I don't say it to the detriment of the other players, because there were a lot of guys who played well tonight, but Nick was the best player on the court for us. He's so comprehensive in his approach. From a defensive perspective he gets four steals, but if he had no steals he'd still be good on defense because he was in the right place. He's contagious with the way he's playing on defense. On offense, I thought even his one turnover was close to an assist. Seven assists and one turnover puts him at 20 assists and four turnovers on the year. Even on shots, he took what the defense gave him and he got to the line. He's a fun guy to have as a teammate because he's so much about playing the right way. He makes the correct pass, he only takes shots when he's open, and he plays hard on defense. He had a great off-season and he's much farther along as a player than a year ago. That's to his credit with all the work he's put in."
On three-point shooting
"We can shoot the ball from the perimeter because we have a number of guys that can do it. We don't just have two or three guys that can. We have four, five, even six guys that if open can hit the three-point shot. We have to be careful in taking too many, especially when on the road which is where we're headed next."
On Northern Arizona
"I think Northern Arizona did a really good job fronting the post and trying to take our inside game away. I think it's part of the reason our big guys didn't get as many shots. In doing that, our guys were able to create open outside shots."
On next game against Texas Tech
"We're 4-0 and we've taken care of what we need to take care of to this point. Our schedule now picks up in quality of opponent and the number of games covered in a short period of time. You don't have that four or five day window to prepare and make sure we're ready. It's going to be up to the guys to go from one game to the next to the next. We play at Texas Tech and they play with a lot of energy. Last year they were one of the youngest teams in college basketball, and they've really grown. You can tell in terms of quickness and athleticism. They like to press so taking care of the ball on the road is going to be a great challenge for some of our young players. As you know, there's no better feeling than being able to go into an away arena and leave with a victory. That's the next challenge."
Arizona Player Quotes
Freshman forward Brandon Ashley
On performance tonight:
"Tonight wasn't my night offensively. I wanted to make sure I was still in the game and contributing on defense by getting rebounds."
On three-point percentage of NAU
"We wanted to chase them off the three point shots and force them to the two point shots with our size."
On first road trip:
"I'm excited to get the first win on the road. I'm looking forward to the game."
Sophomore guard Nick Johnson
On performance tonight:
"We were ready to come out and play. In the first half I felt we gave them a couple easy buckets. With nine days off we wanted to come out and play hard."
On ball security:
"I'm a play maker. When I get comfortable I make plays and my teammates are knocking down the shots and giving me the assists."
On ball movement:
"People are getting more comfortable playing with each other. We have a very deep team and it's going to continue to grow during the year."
On half-time talk:
"We got sloppy. We gave up too many open shots. HE was drilling us on our defense and we wanted to come out in the second half and change that. Coach (Miller) got us to realize that we have to keep on playing and beat the team by as many points as we can."
On first road trip of the season:
"I'm excited. Coach (Miller) said that it's the most exciting feeling to get a win on the road. When we got a win on the road it was the most exciting moment of the season. We have our young guys going on their first road trip but we also have veterans who are ready to play. We're going to go into practice to prepare for Texas Tech and get that win."
