SPRINGFIELD, Mass. University of Arizona junior T.J. McConnell was named one of 23 finalists for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award on Monday in an announcement by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

From an original list of 80 players, a nationally-based committee comprised of media members, head coaches and Hall of Fame members narrowed the group to 23 finalists. The winner of the 2014 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Championship Monday in North Texas as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.

McConnell leads Arizona with averages of 5.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game and a 2.63 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranks second in the Pac-12. He is one of four Pac-12 point guards to make the list of 20 finalists for the Cousy Award, tied with the ACC for the most of any conference.

The Pittsburgh native is averaging 7.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest for the Wildcats, having started all 25 games this season. He has reached double figures in scoring nine times and in assists once this season, and has led UA in assists in 20 of its 25 games.

Heading into Wednesday’s matchup with Utah, McConnell is 48 assists shy of catching Matt Othick (182) on Arizona’s single-season assist chart.
