We held our annual C.A.T.S. Awards banquet earlier this week, which is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a celebration of competitive success, academics and community service, which we feel are extremely important. We urge our student-athletes to be involved in a number of different initiatives while on campus, and this event gives us an opportunity to recognize their dedication and commitment in those areas.

One thing I do want to correct from the evening, in recognizing our various conference and national champions, we failed to acknowledge two of our fine gymnasts that won Pac-12 Championships this year. Junior Allie Flores and sophomore Shelby Edwards shared the Pac-12 Championship on vault after each posted career-best 9.950s. I wish we would have had that in the program, but I did want to take this opportunity to share their accomplishment with you.

If you’d like to read more about our honorees and look at some of the photos from the evening, click here.

As most of you are aware, we have begun the renovation of McKale Center and we’re off to a good start. We have a short timeframe to accomplish everything we want to get done, but the process is moving and there is a lot of action in the building right now. We’ll continue to provide updates throughout the renovation and we plan on sharing photos with you as the process advances.

We continue to receive some questions as to what will happen to the seats once they are replaced with the new versions, so I wanted to provide a reminder that the old seats from McKale Center will not be sold as part of the renovation plan. The timing of the project and need to complete significant upgrades by August forced us to think efficiently in every aspect of the renovation plan. We are proceeding with a plan to recycle as many seat parts and components as possible. This will allow us to earn recycling credit, while protecting the environment from discarded seats and associated materials.

I had a great time visiting with the Tucson Rotary Club this past Wednesday as part of our Ticket to Success Tour. The room was filled with over 200 Rotarians, with a good amount of them wearing the colors. That event alone helped us bring in over $10,000 in ticket sales.

I’m very pleased with how these events have been received. We started with the goal of 10 dates throughout the summer, and as of today, we are already at 12. The most exciting aspect is people are becoming new footballseason ticket holders. They’re showing interest in all areas of the stadium, from club seats to the new $99 value priced season tickets. We’re still considering more stops. If you have an interest in having us visit with your business or organization, please e-mail or call (520) 621-3547.

A full Territorial Cup point is on the line this weekend when baseball hosts our rivals in a three-game series starting this Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game is at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s game starts at 4:30 p.m. We need Tucson to fill up Hi Corbett Field with Wildcats fans wearing red. This is a big weekend for head coach Jim Anderson and the men’s golf team. We are hosting the 2014 Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships this Friday through Sunday at the Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain. There is no charge for admission. We’d love to see you at the golf course, wearing the colors and showing support for our young men competing for a Pac-12 championship. Please click here to view our Pac-12 Championships info page, which includes more information on the course, a tournament schedule and more.

The softball team is now ranked 10th in the country and looking to finish strong. After today, there will only be six home games left. Coincidentally, we have a six-game mini-plan that will get you tickets to each of these final six home games at a discounted price. The Wildcats host Utah Friday, Saturday and Sunday and then finish the season with a three-game series against the top-ranked Oregon Ducks May 8-10. Get a mini-plan today for only $30. Click here to buy online or call 520-621-CATS (2287).

We’re collecting questions and topics to address in Wildcat Wednesday and we’d like to encourage everyone to continue sending items. We don’t expect to be able to answer every question or address every topic, but we’ll do our best to pick items that seem most important to the readers and write about them in the space above. If you have something you think might make a good question or topic, please email it to

This weekend, our basketball coaches will be able to perform live evaluations at nonscholastic events. Nonscholastic events are essentially events that are not organized and conducted through high schools or their athletics associations. In order for our coaches to attend these events, an event must be certified through the NCAA. Certification is granted to those who apply in a timely manner and meet a number of criteria. The criteria cover a wide variety of topics including things like the timing of the event, health and safety of the participants, and even admissions. These events are intended to showcase high level competition under a controlled environment. Let’s hope this weekend is successful for everyone involved.
