Hasslen and Romero Earn First-Place Finishes

Albuquerque, N.M. The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 17 men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up competition at the New Mexico Cherry & Silver Invitational. The two-day meet took place at New Mexico’s Albuquerque Convention Center, which is also the site for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.


In the women’s shot put, senior Alyssa Hasslen won with a toss of 54-10 (16.71m). Junior Baillie Gibson’s throw of 52-6.75 (16.02m) was good for third place overall. On the men’s side, freshman Aaron Castle posted a personal-best toss of 60-11.50 (18.58m) and finished in third place overall. Freshman Jordan Young’s toss of 54-11.25 (16.74m) was good for eighth place. Junior Jovon Cunningham earned a third-place finish in the men’s triple jump competition. He posted a personal-best mark of 52-2.5 (15.91m), just off the school record mark of 52-3.75 (15.94m).


In the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Nnenya Hailey clocked a time of 8.32, which was a personal best. That time was good for second place overall heading into the final. She returned to the final and clocked a personal-best time of 8.28, taking second place overall. Senior Shapri Romero clocked a personal-best time of 53.11 in the 400-meter sprint, the No. 2 time in the country this year. Her time was good for first place overall in the seeded section. Senior Tamara Pridgett took 10th place overall with a personal-best time of 55.65. Freshman Miles Parish clocked a personal-best time of 47.02 in the 400-meter sprint. He finished in third place in heat two of the seeded section.


Senior Germe Poston’s time of 7.55 in the preliminary round of the women’s 60 meters was good for eighth place and a spot in the final. Poston clocked a time of 7.54 in the final, taking seventh place. Sophomore Traci-Lynn Hicks’ time of 8.65 was good for 12th place in the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Morgan Struble had a time of 9.00 in the preliminaries, taking 26th place. Junior Mohammad Alhasan clocked a time of 6.80 in the preliminary round of the men’s 60-meter dash. Senior Lawi Lalang earned a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.20. In the women’s 800 meters, junior Kate Penney clocked a time of 2:11.56, good for second place overall. Senior Meg Bellino had a time of 2:15.11 and earned a fifth-place finish overall.


In the women’s 4x400-meter relay, Hailey, freshman Jasper Gray, Pridgett and Romero ran a season-best time of 3:39.71. That time was good for second place overall. On the men’s side, the quartet of freshman Bryce Houston, Parish, freshman Charles Hodges and senior Neil Houlihan clocked a time of 3:17.36.
