TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 17 men’s track and field team collected an accolade from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Senior Nick Ross was named the USTFCCCA Men’s National Athlete of the Week.

After redshirting the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons, Ross has been on a tear to start the 2014 indoor season. On Friday, Jan. 24, Ross broke his own school record in the men’s high jump competition, clearing 7-7 (2.31m) and earning a first-place finish at the New Mexico Cherry & Silver Invitational. Ross’ mark is No.1 the country and tied for No. 5 in the world this year. That mark also tied the Albuquerque Convention Center facility record set by Erik Kynard in 2012. Ross set the previous school record of 7-6.5 (2.30m) on January 17, 2014 in Flagstaff, Ariz. Ross now sits in a six-way tie for No. 10 on the all-time indoor collegiate list for the men’s high jump.

Ross also became just the third collegian to clear a height of 7-7 in the month of January – and the first since 2000. He joins Texas’ Mark Boswell (2000) and former collegiate record holder Franklin Jacobs of Fairleigh Dickinson (1978) as the only other member of that list.

The Pac-12 swept the USTFCCA National Athlete of the Week honors; Laura Roesler of Oregon claimed the accolade on the women’s side.
