Arizona vs. No. 5 Long Beach State - 11:00 a.m.
Arizona vs. Irvine Valley College - 1:00 p.m.
Hello Wildcat fans! Happy Monday!
The Sand Cats were up in Phoenix this weekend competing in a tournament at Grand Canyon University against the ‘Lopes and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Friday we had team competitions against both schools and just barely lost. Each of the competitions were decided by the third seeded team and we were so close! Ronni Lewis and Taylor Arizobal played two solid matches that were decided in the third sets. Only losing by two each time was a heart breaker but they played some seriously outstanding volleyball.
That afternoon, bracket play began which was single elimination. Three of the five Sand Cat teams advanced in the bracket. Taylor and Ronni had to play the same Nebraska team they lost to in team competition but this time they got their revenge! I’m so proud of them for coming back and Bearing Down!
Unfortunately, the way the bracketing worked out, in the first match on Saturday morning Jane and I had to play one of our own teams. We played the Witt sisters and we ended up advancing to the semifinals. In the semifinals we played a great Nebraska team and were able to get past them to get to the match for the final. The final match was against Grand Canyon’s number one team and it was a tough one. We took the first set 22-20, but couldn’t grasp the next two. All in all, the Cats played some great volleyball this weekend regardless of the outcome. It’s awesome to see us get better and better with each weekend of competition.
Aside from volleyball, playing in Phoenix is something I always look forward to because I get to see friends and family from home. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch this weekend, it is always nice to have a cheering section. Much appreciated!
Coming up for the Sand Cats, we will be traveling to Irvine, California on Thursday night to compete against Irvine Valley College and Long Beach State University on Friday.
Until next Monday, BEARDOWN!
