TUCSON, Ariz. – After falling behind early, the Arizona sand volleyball team rallied to make things interesting but Arizona State took the deciding match to defeat the Wildcats, 3-2, Thursday afternoon at the PERA Club.
The Sun Devils grabbed the early momentum with a pair of victories in the first round of play. The No. 5 team of Andi Lowrance and Nora Tuioti-Mariner took down the Arizona duo of Taylor Arizobal and Jazmine Campas, 21-11, 21-13. In the next match, BreElle Bailey and Genevieve Pirotte took down Allie Cook and Penina Snuka at the No. 4 position, 21-18, 21-17.
Arizona would not go down without a fight as the No. 1 team of Madi Kingdon and Ronni Lewis stayed hot despite dropping the opening set to Bianca Arellano and Bethany Jorgenson, 21-17. Kingdon/Lewis took the second set 21-17 to force a decisive third set. The Arizona duo won four out of the final five points in the third set to win, 15-11.
In the decisive match, Arizona’s No. 2 team of Madison and McKenna Witt jumped out to a strong start as they took the opening set over Whitney Follette and Macey Gardner, 21-14. Follette and Gardner would not go down without a fight; however, as the ASU duo took the second set 21-19 to regain the momentum. The decisive third set went back and forth as neither team could gain a significant advantage. Then, with the score tied 14-14, ASU won two straight points to clinch the victory.
The Wildcats will close out the season at home on Saturday with matches against No. 1 USC at 9 a.m. and Boise State at 1 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
