Clancy Shields, who has signed a contract extension through 2029, has elevated Arizona Men’s Tennis into a perennial national contender and one of the nation’s most consistently successful programs. Over the Wildcats’ first two seasons as members of the Big 12 Conference, Shields has guided Arizona to back-to-back conference championships and consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances.
In Arizona’s inaugural season in the Big 12, the Wildcats posted a 26-5 overall record, captured the 2025 Big 12 Tournament Championship, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Wildcats followed that campaign with arguably the finest season in school history in 2025-26, compiling a 24-5 overall record while posting a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play to secure the 2026 Big 12 Regular Season Championship.
Arizona closed the 2026 regular season with 15 consecutive victories, including four wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Wildcats defeated three straight ranked teams in late March, highlighted by back-to-back victories over No. 8 Baylor and No. 2 TCU. The win over TCU marked the highest-ranked victory in program history. Arizona earned the No. 8 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, the highest NCAA Tournament seed in school history, and hosted the opening two rounds in Tucson. After sweeping Northern Arizona and defeating Clemson, 4-2, the Wildcats advanced to the Sweet 16. Arizona then hosted NCAA Tournament play through the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history and defeated No. 9 Oklahoma, 4-3, to earn the program’s first-ever Elite Eight appearance before falling to No. 1 Wake Forest.
The Wildcats concluded the 2026 season ranked No. 7 in the nation, the highest final team ranking in program history. Senior Jay Friend finished the year ranked No. 3 nationally in singles, tying the highest final singles ranking by a player in school history. Friend earned Big 12 Co-Player of the Year honors, ITA First Team All-America recognition, and CSC Academic First Team All-America honors. Overall, Arizona placed four players on the All-Big 12 Team, as Sasha Rozin and Filip Gustafsson earned First Team singles honors, while the doubles teams of Friend/Rozin and Gustafsson/Glib Sekachov received First Team All-Big 12 recognition. The Wildcats also finished the season with four players in the final ITA singles rankings and three doubles teams in the final ITA doubles rankings.
Arizona also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.624 team GPA during the spring semester, the highest among all Arizona men’s athletic programs. The Wildcats swept the final ITA Southwest Regional Rankings, finishing No. 1 as a team while Friend claimed the top regional singles ranking and Gustafsson/Sekachov finished No. 1 in doubles.
The 2024-25 season also proved to be one of the most successful in program history, as Arizona advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, an unprecedented achievement for the Wildcats. Shields’ leadership continued to elevate Arizona’s national profile while reinforcing its reputation as one of the toughest home-court environments in collegiate tennis.
Senior Colton Smith completed an undefeated senior season, earned ITA Singles All-America honors, finished the year ranked No. 3 nationally, and made an immediate impact on the professional circuit. Smith captured the Cleveland ATP Challenger title, advanced through the opening round of the ATP 1000 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 Houston Open, and climbed to a career-high ATP ranking of No. 161.
Friend also enjoyed a historic 2025 campaign, earning ITA Academic All-America honors, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, and finishing the season ranked No. 9 nationally. He joined Smith to give Arizona two top-10 singles players for the first time in program history, with both earning ITA Singles All-America recognition.
Prior to Arizona’s move to the Big 12, Shields coached senior captain Jonas Ziverts to the program’s first ITA Southwest Region Player of the Year honor and Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition. In 2021, the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in program history while setting a then-school record with 21 victories.
Shields, a three-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2019, 2021, 2024) and two-time ITA Southwest Region Coach of the Year (2019, 2024), led the Wildcats to unprecedented success, as Arizona captured three straight regular-season conference championships from 2022–2024 in the Pac-12 and hosted the NCAA first and second rounds for three consecutive years.
His impact on the program has been transformative: six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, multiple All-Americans, a surge in national rankings, and an elevated standard of excellence. Shields continues to position Arizona as a national power.
Prior to Arizona, Shields led Utah State to the 2016 Mountain West title and was named both MWC Coach of the Year and Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.
As a student-athlete at Boise State, Shields was a four-time Academic All-WAC honoree and the 2009 WAC Player of the Year, helping lead the Broncos to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Shields was ranked as high as No. 17 nationally in singles and No. 11 in doubles.
