Anna earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a minor in Sociology from Wake Forest University. She continued her education at the University of Arizona where she received her Masters in Education. Anna Heyer has taught science at Flowing Wells High School since 2007.

Anna believes the key to keeping students not only engaged but excited about their education, is a purpose driven curriculum that is relevant and innovative. Inquiry based instruction and cooperative learning are two strategies Anna relies on to effectively teach science to her students. She believes science education should be hands-on, creative, and help students develop problem solving skills. She specifically teaches employability skills like team work, communication, and efficiency in the work place. She wants her students to be successful beyond the classroom, and believes that her teaching strategies will encourage her students to think critically and work well with others.

Anna sponsors a Science Club and a Bug Club. She is also a coordinator of several scientific projects such as Science Outreach, Science Camping Retreats to Grey Hawk Nature Center and to the Grand Canyon, the Manduca Project, and the Binational Arsenic Environmental Study. She also serves as a lead writer for the Bioscience Curriculum Design Project, is a National Science Foundation Presenter, Science Fair Chair, and is on the Biotechnology Advisory Board.

Three years ago, Anna organized Flowing Wells High School's first Science Fair. There were 30 projects entered the first year; last year there were over 150 entries. In addition, to help students develop a passion for science news and journal articles, she began Café Fridays. Each Friday students bring in snacks for a reading and discussion session devoted to current science news.

Anna loves to see students not only excited about scientific information but actively seeking questions and answers on their own.
