ISLEWORTH, FLA. – The University of Arizona Men's Golf team completed the first round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational with a score of 297 (+9).
"We are getting very close as a team. The field here is outstanding and we have played pretty solid minus a couple of mistakes. When we clean them up, we will post a great score and show each other that we can play with anyone. This field is some of the country's best teams and we have a great opportunity to post some wins after hanging tough today. George and David were very solid and having them under and around par will mean good things for the team. I am particularly proud of our entire team's ability to stay patient through a rough stretch today. We counted three double bogeys in a two hole stretch after the turn, but they battled back and finished strong."
Leading the Cats in the opening day of the competition was junior
George Cunningham. The Tucson native carded a 71 (-1), his lowest 18-hole score since his freshman year, to tie for ninth.
"Today was a really good day," noted Cunningham. "I tried to play to the middle of the greens, and hit the ball more conservatively to make par at every hole. I felt like my game has been coming together before this tournament, and this round really helped to seed that feeling in. For the next two days, I'm going to continue with the same game plan; which is play to the middle of the greens, and make pars."
Freshman
David Laskin sits tied for 26th with a score of 73 (+1). The freshman recorded three birdies in his third collegiate tournament. Junior
Jordan Gumberg went three over to card a 75 (+3) in the first round to tie for 43rd.
Senior
Redford Bobbitt and junior
Ethan Marcus ended the day tied for 62nd place with a score of 78 (+6).
The Wildcats tee off tomorrow at 5:25 a.m. MST.
