Gumberg, Cunningham Lead Cats in Day Two of Tavistock

ISLEWORTH, FLA. – The University of Arizona Men's Golf team completed the second round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, ending the day in 11th place with a score of 592 (+16) after two of three rounds played.

"Today was another up and down day," commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. "I am very proud of the composure we are demonstrating and tomorrow we need to improve on some strategy decisions. Our opening nine holes were very good and we had it under par through the turn. A few mistakes, including four doubles were counted today, so we need to remain patient even if we are over par tomorrow. Finishing strong is important and we slipped at the end today. I think the guys know we are close and maybe got a little ahead of themselves at the end. If we stay patient, we can post a great score in final round and move up the board. The team has improved since the beginning of year and we are going to be ready tomorrow."

The Wildcats recorded 17 birdies in day two of the competition, and three of the five Cats competing birdied the 573 yard par 5 seventh hole.

Leading the Cats in day two of the competition were juniors Jordan Gumberg and George Cunningham. Gumberg shot par on the day, recording four of his six birdies in round two. The Fort Lauderdale native three consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14, and 15. Cunningham shot a 76 (+4) on the day. The pair of juniors sit tied for 31st with a score of 147 (+3) going into the final day of competition.

"I felt good today," commented Gumberg, "everything was clicking. I just need to keep hitting the ball in the center of the greens to really give myself a chance. The golf course is in great shape, we just need to stay focused and see if we can climb up the leaderboard and knock off some of these top ranked teams."

Junior Ethan Marcus and freshman David Laskin end the second day of play in a tie for 51st place with a score of 151 (+7). Marcus shot a 73 (+1) on the day and Laskin recorded a 78 (+6).

Senior Redford Bobbitt is tied for 56th with a score of 152 (+8).

The Wildcats tee off tomorrow at 5:25 a.m. MST.
