TUCSON, Ariz. – The rain came out once again, but that didn't stop the ladies from playing the final day of the Wildcat Invitational. Despite the suboptimal weather, the play on the court was fantastic.
"The team had a great day going 3-0 in doubles and following those matches with consistent singles play," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "Overall, we made a lot of progress over the weekend while also noticing those areas that will require some work. Samantha had a terrific tournament and I was happy to see her get the tough wins and the title. She always battles hard but she's been working on some new things and to see her play gutsy when she needed to was very satisfying."
The day started out with some additional doubles matches that were played to get everyone some more experience on the court.
Camila Wesbrooks and
Alexandra Taylor defeated Valdez/Harlas of New Mexico State, 7-5.
Elena Schneider, paired up with Maria Paula Medina of UTEP, lost to UTSA's Rosell/Kato 6-2.
Devin Chypyha and
Samantha Czarniak took on UTEP's Pietersz/Wagenvoort and won, 6-4.
Sophia Thomas and
Maggie Cohen took down Cabrera/Menon of UTSA, 6-0.Then came the real battle.
In the singles Red Flight, Czarniak battled with New Mexico's Ludivine Burgeuiere in what was probably the match of the tournament. Czarniak took an early lead in the first set, but Burgeuiere eventually won 6-4. In the second set, Burgeuiere held a 5-4 lead and was on the verge of clinching the title. Czarniak didn't give up, though, and won three straight games to take the set 7-5. The third set belonged to Czarniak, and she took home the championship with a 6-3 victory in the deciding set.
On the consolation side of the Red Flight, Westbrooks was also playing in the final. She defeated Daphne Visccher of UTEP in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). With the victory, Wesbrooks took home fifth place in the bracket.
In the Blue Flight, Thomas matched up against Denisa Ibrahimovic of UTSA in the third place match. Thomas fell quickly in the first set, but eventually battled back to win an epic third set (0-6, 6-4, 10-8). In the seventh place game, Taylor took on NAU's Eirene Granville but lost in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). In the consolation final, Schneider knocked off Maria Paula Medina of UTEP (Medical Retirement) to take fifth place.
