Cunningham in Third at Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. – The University of Arizona men's golf team has competed in the first 36 holes of the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, California. The Cats end day two with a score of 594 (+26) and are currently in sixth place. The Cats rank in the top five in par-3 and par-5 scoring, scoring 11 over on par-3s and five under in par-5 scoring. The team recorded 13 of their 27 birdies on the day.

"We didn't have our best stuff today," noted head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. "George and Jordan lead the way for us in some tough conditions, and I know both of them will have good finishes tomorrow. We need everyone to show up ready to play and really work on hitting the ball in the middle of the green. The wind presented challenges today and the greens have progressively sped up this week. We need to be ready for another challenging round of golf and hopefully we will respond better tomorrow."

Leading the Cats in the second round was junior George Cunningham. The Tucson product shot even on the day, recording three birdies. Cunningham will go into the final 18 holes in third place with a score of 143 (+1), four strokes behind the leader from the host school, Eduardo Carrete. The junior ranks in the top-10 in par-3 & 4 scoring, and in pars made.

"Today was another solid day," commented Cunningham. "I was able to keep my ball in play off the tee like yesterday, which sets me up well for my approach shots into the greens. The wind today wasn't as constant as yesterday, but it was a little swirly and gusty which made club choices a little more difficult today than yesterday. I'm going to do the same thing tomorrow as I've done the last two rounds; hit my ball in play off the tee and play conservative when I need to, and be aggressive when the opportunity arises."

With weather being one of the biggest factors throughout the tournament, junior Jordan Gumberg's 149 (+7) after 36 holes will sit him in a tie for 21st place. The Fort Lauderdale native recorded three of his six birdies in day two of the competition.

Junior Ethan Marcus and freshman David Laskin end the day with a score of 154  (+12) and in a tie for 77th place. Senior Redford Bobbitt goes into the final round in a tie for 61st place with a score of 155 (+13).

Freshman Briggs Duce competed in the completion as an individual. The Sierra Vista native ends the day in a tie for 77th place with a score of 160 (+18).

The Cats will tee off for the final round on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. MST.
