Cats Outlast No. 20 Oregon in Five Sets in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. -- Arizona won the final two sets to come from behind and take down No. 20 Oregon in five sets in Eugene on Friday night (27-25, 17-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-11).

The victory marked Arizona's fourth straight road victory vs. a ranked opponent, marking the first time in school history the Cats had accomplished the feat.

"Terrific win for the team," said head coach Dave Rubio. "Great effort by everyone on the squad. We really had to dig deep to win the match, it was a much needed win."

The Cats took a marathon of a first set, 27-25 before Oregon cruised to a 25-17 victory in the second and was dominating the third 22-10. Arizona ripped off a 10-1 run from that point, and though Oregon fought UA off in the third, 25-21, the 11-point stretch in the third set changed the match.

Despite dropping the set, Arizona had stolen the momentum and carried that into a 25-13 drubbing in the fourth and won the fifth 15-11 to take the match.

Kendra Dahlke, who did not play the first time these teams met this season in Tucson, a four-set Oregon win, led all scorers with 22 kills on .383 hitting. The sophomore added nine digs and four blocks.

Kalei Mau added 16 kills and Tyler Spriggs contributed four key kills late in the match off the bench.

"Tyler Spriggs came in once again and did a terrific job," said Rubio. "Kalei did a great job of coming back and playing really well at the end after struggling in game 2. Kendra was just terrific – she had outstanding numbers. Overall a great match and great win against a really good team."

Penina Snuka was excellent as well for Arizona, picking up her sixth straight double-double, 15th overall, with 53 assists and 13 digs. Snuka added four kills, one off her season high.

Laura Larson notched her second straight 20-plus dig match, leading the Cats with 21. Arizona had 73 as a team. McKenna Painton tied a season-high with 12 digs.

UA outblocked the Ducks 11-10. Devyn Cross posted six blocks to go along with six kills.

Oregon raced out to an early four-point lead before Kalei Mau and Kendra Dahlke got going for the Wildcats. Mau and Dahlke notched seven kills apiece and Arizona overcame eight attack errors, five service errors and three fought-off set-points from Oregon to win the first, 27-25.

The Ducks responded with a dominant performance in set No. 2, 25-17 and were crushing the Wildcats in the third, 22-10.

Arizona then ripped off a 10-1 run, and though the Cats lost the third, 25-21, UA stole the momentum heading into the fourth.

The Cats scored the first four points of the fourth set and raced out to a 12-4 lead. There was no looking back as the Cats dominated the fourth, 25-13.

Arizona held Oregon to .080 hitting in the fifth and won handily, 15-11.
