Lauren Marker Claims UNLV Invitational Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Arizona had two players competing for championships on Sunday, and senior Lauren Marker was able to fight her way to victory at the UNLV Rebel Tennis Women's Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The Wildcats also wrapped up their fall schedule at the SDSU Fall Classic #2 in San Diego, Calif.

In Las Vegas, No. 37 Marker asserted her dominance a final time by defeating No. 29 Martina Frantove of N.C. State, 6-4, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Samantha Czarniak dropped a tough match to SMU's Sarai Monarrez, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Marie Van Aelst suffered a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Deborah Suarez of Purdue. In the doubles third-place game, Czarniak/Van Aelst lost to Texas A&M's Bhosule/Hristov, 8-3.

Head coach Vicky Maes watched on as Marker won the tournament in Las Vegas. "I saw a lot of really good things from our girls today," said Maes. "It was great that Lauren picked up the title and dominated the field. I was also happy with the improvements Sam and Marie showed. They both demonstrated a willingness to get out of their comfort zone which will work in their favor in the long run."

While Marker was busy battling for a tournament championship in Las Vegas, so was Camila Wesbrooks in San Diego. Wesbrooks battled through a tough three set match, but eventually lost to UNT's Maria Kononova, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, the Wildcats had four competitors. Paris Corley dropped her match against KSU's Millie Stretton, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Elena Schneider was defeated by Marina Colvee of SDSU, 6-2, 6-2. Sophia Thomas lost 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-3 to KSU's Palma Juhasz. Maggie Cohen also fell in a three-set match, losing to Mia Smith of SDSU, 7-6, 1-6, 6-1. In the doubles consolation bracket, Wesbrooks/Corley lost to KSU's Garcia Navas/Panaite, 6-4. Thomas/Schneider were defeated by Larsson/Acero of SDSU, 6-4.
