Tucson, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats held their second annual Wild vs. Cats Draft on Monday night at the Sands Club at Arizona Stadium.
The draft determined the teams for this weekend's Wild vs. Cats World Series, which serves as the culmination of fall practice for coach
Jay Johnson and the baseball squad. The three-game Wild vs. Cats World Series begins Friday, continues Saturday and wraps up Sunday afternoon with the finale. Last year, Team Wild built a big lead over the first two days, only to see Team Cats come back on the final day to claim the series victory.
The games are scored in a non-traditional manner. Instead of just keeping score via runs, Coach Johnson has an elaborate scoring system that rewards solid fundamentals and execution.
Team Cats will be captained by senior infielder
Casey Bowman and senior pitcher Austin Schnbael. Senior pitcher
Luke Soroko and senior infielder
Michael Hoard will lead Team Wild. Bowman won an arm wrestling competition before the draft to secure the No. 1 pick for Team Cats.
For the second straight year, catcher
Cesar Salazar was the No. 1 overall pick, going to Bowman, Schnabel and Team Cats. Team Wild took outfielder/pitcher Cal Stevenson with the second overall pick, making him their No. 1 selection.
