Mondays With Malena: Volume 4

Hey guys!

We got a couple of victories last week, including a tough overtime win against New Mexico State on the road. We drove up to Las Cruces on Saturday morning after a nice breakfast at Prep & Pastry, practiced, went to a local restaurant named K-Bobs Steakhouse for dinner, then played the next day. We drove home right after the game and are back at it with practice today. Here's a little insight on this last week.

Responding after the loss to North Texas:
"The loss to North Texas was tough, but we watched a lot of film and talked about what we did wrong and things we needed to get better at. Its basketball, we know we're not going to be able to win every game, so it's just important to bounce back after any loss. We now have won three straight games, so now we have to continue to come out hard. Coach Adia Barnes has been talking about how we tend to come out a little soft and not aggressive enough, and then we have to claw our way back up to take the lead. Our focus right now is coming out hard and aggressive to start the first quarter."

My big game (Washington scored 26 points against New Mexico State):
"I just felt like I needed to give the team a little boost. I know we never had a lead of really more than five or six points, so I just felt like I needed to be there to help pick up the slack to help the team get a win. It is definitely cool to score a career high 26 points though."

Getting to the rim:
"I think that is a big focus for me, but that's always been my game, trying to attack. That's what I do a lot and that's what I'm good at. Also I know it gives, especially if the game is going back and forth, my team and me a little breather."

More bus rides:
"It was fun. We had two four-hour bus rides, so it gave us a lot of time to bond. We were up playing games like Uno and all that, so we had our fun. We're a very talkative team, so after we got our homework out of the way, we played a lot of games and talked a lot both on the way there and on the way back. I think these trips really help us come together as a team."

Our next game is Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against San Diego right here in Tucson, so we are looking forward to playing in front of the best fans in the best arena!
