PEARL HARBOR AND U.S.S. ARIZONA RECOGNITIONS AT HAWAI'I GAME
Earlier this week, we announced some of the special recognitions that will take place in and around our football game against Hawai'i as WE REMEMBER the upcoming 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of the U.S.S. Arizona, including the 1,177 officers and crewmen who lost their lives on Dec. 7, 1941.
We're asking fans to be in Arizona Stadium by 7:40 p.m. to take part in the various remembrances.
The U.S.S. Arizona, which was named in honor of the 48th state's admission into the union, will forever connect our state with the events that transpired on that fateful day. As a way to honor the U.S.S. Arizona and its crew, our football team will be wearing custom uniforms on Saturday. The uniforms were developed with the U.S.S. Arizona in mind and the colors are inspired by those of the famous battleship. You can watch our uniform reveal video by clicking HERE.
Here are some details on the uniforms:
Helmets: We'll wear white helmets to replicate the color of the upper mast structures on the U.S.S. Arizona. The helmet will house a Block A that appeared on the jersey of one of the U.S.S. Arizona's football teams. In addition, a U.S.S. Arizona bell sticker will be placed on the back of the helmet as will the rally cry of the ship, "At 'Em Arizona." The plate on the front of the helmet, just above the facemask, will recognize the date of the Pearl Harbor attack, 12-7-41.
Jerseys: We'll wear grey jerseys to replicate the color of the U.S.S. Arizona's hull. Instead of traditional last names on the back of the jersey, we're using a back nameplate of BB-39, the ship's hull number. A patch of the medallion worn by Esther Ross at the ship's christening and launch on June 19, 1915 will appear on the front collar. The left shoulder will house a patch of the 48-star flag to recognize Arizona as the 48th state in the union and the right shoulder will house the 47th Fighter Squadron patch, representing the 47th Pursuit Squadron credited with shooting down eight aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941.
Pants: We'll wear red pants to replicate the color of the U.S.S. Arizona's keel.

Here is a look at the other remembrance items that were released earlier this week:
Game Program: There will be a special edition of the game program including a commemorative cover, information on the University of Arizona's connection to the U.S.S. Arizona, and a list containing the names of the 1,177 crewmen and officers, who lost their lives aboard the U.S.S. Arizona.
National Anthem: You will not want to miss this national anthem ceremony. It will include U.S.S. Arizona survivor Lauren Bruner, a giant U.S. flag on the field presented by members of the UA's ROTC programs, the national anthem performed by a current UA ROTC cadet, and a skydiver.
Team Entrance: Our football team will enter the field carrying a 48-star U.S. internment flag. The flag will be presented at midfield to U.S.S. Arizona survivor Lauren Bruner prior to the coin toss.
Coin Toss: The coin toss will use the squadron commander's coin from the 47th Fighter Squadron, stationed at Davis-Monthan. The 47th Fighter Squadron was originally the 47th Pursuit Squadron, and was assigned to Wheeler Field, Hawai'i. The squadron was credited with shooting down eight aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941, in defense of Pearl Harbor. Joining us to present the squadron coin on behalf of the 47th Fighter Squadron is Colonel Scott Campbell, Commander of the 355th Fighter Wing at DM Air Force Base.
WE REMEMBER Halftime: U.S.S. Arizona survivor Lauren Bruner and several World War II veterans will join us for an on-field ceremony to remember Pearl Harbor, to pay tribute to those lost during the attack and the subsequent world war, and to be honored for their military service to our country.
As part of the remembrance, we are extending a special invitation to all active and retired military to join us at the game. All active and retired military can purchase tickets to this game at 50% off. A military ID must be presented in person at the McKale Ticket Office to receive this discounted price. In addition, the Pac-12 Conference has an international offering that is available for a fee for anyone outside of the United States and China. The link below will have more information on Saturday for those who are geographically eligible.

ACADEMIC UPDATE: SUMMER 2016
Building on our academic update from a few weeks ago, we just received the final information from our summer sessions. Almost 70% of the 353 student-athletes enrolled in summer courses posted at least a 3.0 GPA, while a little over 45% achieved at least a 3.5 GPA. In addition, we had 103 student-athletes earn perfect 4.0 GPAs. Fourteen of our teams combined for 3.0 GPAs or higher and 16 of the 19 teams scored at least a 2.75 GPA. Women's cross country led all of our teams with a 3.86 GPA, while swimming and diving led our men's programs with a 3.34 GPA.
We are continuing to see our student-athletes perform at a high level in the classroom. The young men and women in our programs, along with our fantastic C.A.T.S. Academics staff, are doing a great job and we expect that to continue moving forward.

COMPLIANCE CORNER
Did you know that inappropriate actions by local businesses can affect a student-athlete's eligibility while damaging the reputation of the University of Arizona? According to NCAA rules, student-athletes are prohibited from receiving extra benefits and preferential treatment. Any special discounts or arrangements that are not otherwise available to the general student population or the public are impermissible and may not be given to student-athletes, their friends, or family. Some examples of impermissible benefits and preferential treatment include free or reduced-cost admissions into events or establishments that aren't otherwise available to regular students, and free or reduced-cost goods or services that are not otherwise available to regular students.
Local businesses are wonderful supporters and we want to continue that relationship, but we need continuous help to ensure that our student-athletes remain eligible for competition by adhering to NCAA rules in the interactions you may have with our student-athletes.
