CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS STEP UP TO HELP APPREHEND THIEF
Last week, our cross country teams were in Minneapolis to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational, and one day later, they ran for an entirely different reason. On Sunday morning, the men's team was consolidating bags into one room as they waited to head to the airport. A few of them decided to head to breakfast, but All-American Collins Kibet stayed behind.
When he brought his bags to the particular room, he noticed something strange and then saw a flash leaving the room. He proceeded to follow the sounds of doors shutting in the stair well, sensing something was wrong. As he reached the ground floor, he noticed someone with a couple of bags that had been taken from the room and he confronted the person. At the same time, he dialed 9-1-1 to report the mischievous act, but didn't actually speak to anyone as he proceeded to follow the individual.
By a stroke of luck, the chase happened to pass the location where his teammates were eating. Confused, they wondered why Collins was chasing after this person, but instead of letting him get away, teammates Bailey Roth, Emilio Vasquez, Patrick Leary, Hunter Davila, Daniom Tecle and Collins continued pursuit. Then, Hunter made contact with the police to report what was going on. The police advised them to stop pursuing so Collins stopped, but Bailey continued tailing the thief. The chase eventually reached the highway, where Bailey flagged down the Highway Patrol, who proceeded to apprehend the suspect, who was someone the Minneapolis Police had been trying to catch for some time.
We want to highlight this for a couple of reasons. First, kudos to our young men for following the principles of our Step UP! program, being aware, and looking out for each other. While the thief had dropped a couple of the bags during the chase, he still had wallets and watches on him when he was arrested, which were able to be returned.
Second, and most importantly, we spoke with the Minneapolis Police and they shared a couple of pointers if you find yourself in this position in order to ensure your safety. They recommend keeping the suspect in sight if possible and being prepared to give a detailed description, but they don't advise confronting a suspect.
In this instance, the thief was carrying a knife and actually pulled it on Collins outside the hotel and on Bailey as he was pursuing him, so this story could have ended differently, but we're certainly glad it didn't. We appreciate and respect the citizenship shown by these young men, but we want them to be safe as well. We hope this not only brings a smile to your face as you think about the positive things so many of our student-athletes are doing, but also serves as an informational piece if you find yourself in this situation.
Be safe. Be a good citizen and Bear Down.
