FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The University of Arizona cross country team competed today in the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, Arizona. Arizona's women finished in third-place with a score of 72. Arizona's men finished in fourth-place with a score of 85.
"The people who ran today, in general, ran well." head coach James Li said. "Obviously not well enough to score well as a team, but we were able to hold some of the top marks of the race with some of our top guys and gals out. I was happy with our first meet today and think we have some things we are going to improve on."
Addi Zerrenner was the highlight for Arizona today as she placed first in the 2.6-mile race with a personal best time of 14:53.8. Last year her best 2.6-mile time was 15:55. at the Dave Murray Invitational.
"It was really good to see Addi win the race today. She did it in a pretty significant fashion as well." Li said.
Freshman Jenny Baragar-Petrash made a solid collegiate debut as she finished in ninth-place at a time of 16:20.6. Kayla Ferron finished close behind in 13th-place, clocking in 16:35.1. Hannah Whetzel came in 20th with a time of 16:58.7. Margie Moyer placed 56th with a time of 18:27.1. Rounding it out for Arizona's women was who Tiffany Riley clocked in at 19:33.2 for a 68th-place finish.
The men were lead by Hunter Davila, who made his cross country debut by placing 12th in the 4.5-mile race with a time of 23:52.1. Jeffrey Gautreau finished behind him in 18th, clocking in at 24:27.7. Matthew Beer clocked in at 24:34.6 for a 20th-place finish. Emilio Vasquez finished right behind Beer for a 21st-place finish at 24:53.9. Rounding out the George Kyte Classic for the men was freshman Lance Pederson who placed 63rd with a time of 27:06.3.
Arizona will be at home in two weeks on Friday, September 16th for the Dave Murray Classic hosted at the Randolph North Golf Course here in Tucson, Arizona.
