TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona football program announced its first weekly awards Sunday afternoon, naming
Dane Cruikshank the defensive player of the week and
Nick Wilson the team's offensive player of the week.
The Wildcats dropped a nail-biter to BYU in Glendale on Saturday night when a field goal with four seconds left in the game gave the Cougars an 18-16 victory. Arizona had rallied with two fourth quarter touchdowns to take its only lead a minute earlier.
A junior cornerback, Cruikshank was strong in his Wildcat debut after redshirting the 2015 season following his transfer from Citrus College. The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder registered eight tackles – all solo stops – while limiting the Cougars' passing attack from producing any plays of 20-plus yards. While not officially credited with a pass breakup, Cruikshank did knock away a pass a two-point conversion try in the fourth quarter.
Wilson, the junior running back, produced his 11th career 100-yard rushing game as he collected 138 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. The Fresno, Calif., native sparked the offense to its late surge, scoring on touchdown runs of 15 and 49 yards in the fourth quarter. The latter handed the Wildcats their first lead of the game with 1:26 to play. His 8.1 yards per carry marked the fourth-best individual game average of his career.
Head coach
Rich Rodriguez also named several other weekly award winners in the program, including:
Jamie Nunley, Freshman, TE (Scout Offensive Player of the Week)
Matthew Stagg, Senior, LB (Scout Defensive Player of the Week)
