TUCSON, ARIZ. – On Wednesday, Arizona Alumni Jim Furyk (1989-1992) has been named the 2018 USA Ryder Cup Team USA captain. Furyk, who has competed in nine consecutive Ryder Cups with a 10-20-4 record, is the first Wildcat to earn the title of captain. Furyk named Davis Love III, who played collegiate golf at the University of North Carolina, his vice captain.
"This is such an honor," Furyk said at his press conference. "In my opinion, the Ryder Cup embodies everything that is special about golf. Davis is going to be a tough act to follow. He put a system in place, got the players behind it. His experience, two captaincies and a vice captaincy, will be priceless for me so I'm happy to have him by my side."
The 2018 Ryder Cup will be played at Le Golf National just outside of Paris. It's the first time France has ever hosted the event. Furyk will face a daunting task in leading Team USA to its first win on foreign soil in the event since 1993.
The Wildcat Alumni, the only player in Tour history to post multiple rounds in the 50's, is coming off a year where he became the first in PGA Tour history to record a 58, in the final round of the Travelers Championship. The Ryder Cup captain owns two Ryder Cup wins himself and was the 2010 FedEx Cup Champion and PGA Tour Player of the Year; his only major win was the 2003 U.S. Open.
